< BENÉCIA

Benécia [bɛ ˈnɛ ki a] is a kingdom on the middle Eärdur river. After the decline of Caďinas, the area was dominated by various barbarian tribes, then reconquered by the successor kingdoms of Barakhún and Bešbalic. Benécia emerged about 2988, drifting out of Barakhina’s notice rather than rebelling— though Benécians tell heroic tales about the forging of their land.

Benécia was the first Arašei-ruled land since Cuzeian times; the population is about 85% Arašei. It accepted the Union with the Elenicoi in 3020. With the Union the church hierarchy became stronger, and the Benécians, who had been content as Arašei to accept the spiritual direction of the Numícoro (Prophet) of Ilad, chafed when he was made a Patriarch (perař). After a generation of rancor, the Benécian church received its own Patriarchate with its seat in Nëron Pavel (3072). Actual doctrine and practice have not been greatly changed by the Union, except for the establishment of a communion mass once a year, at which the story of Iesu is told.

Benécia has its own language, which resembles both Verdurian and Barakhinei. Its only literate class is the clergy (indeed, monks write the court’s records); theoretically they write Verdurian, but in an archaic form ignoring Elena’s spelling reform. Diplomatic correspondence is written in Caďinor.
