The coffee plant is a thick, glossy, dark-green bush bearing white flowers and then red berries; these are dried and roasted to produce coffee beans. Finally, the beans are ground and steeped in boiling water to produce a stimulating, dark beverage.

Coffee was first grown in Moreo Ašcai, and adopted first by the Nanese who originally settled the islands and continued to trade with them, and then by the Kebreni, who exported it to Eretald. The Kebreni monopoly on coffee was one of the precipitating factors in the Verduria-Kebreni wars two centuries ago. Since then the Kebreni have lost their hold on Nanese trade, but have made Moreo Ašcai into a virtual colony. The Verdurian colony on Leán was founded in part to have a tropical outpost to grow coffee in.

In Moreo Ašcai itself coffee is drunk black; the Nanese take it with sugar. These preferences have extended to their clients, the Kebreni and Verdurians, respectively.
