Cotton
From Almeopedia
Cotton is a bushy plant whose seed pods contain downy fibers that are spun into thread. Wild cotton pods burst open, leaving the pods to float away on their silky parachutes; domesticated varieties stay on the plant until harvested— a laborious operation, but one which is made worthwhile by the softness of the resulting fabric; only silk is softer.
The variety grown in Eretald is native to Lácatur (hence its name); other cotton species are cultivated in Kebri and Dhekhnam, and the ‘dark cotton’ of Bolon is one of the chief textiles of Xengiman. It doesn’t grow south of Bolon or north of the Irenja.
Local varieties of the same species were independently domesticated in Téllinor and Uytai.
The natural color of Lácatur cotton is slightly bluish, and Bolon cotton a dark beige; that of Téllinor is more yellow, and that of Uytai more ivory. All varieties take dyes very well, however.
