The zones of Ereláe

The temperate zone of Ereláe is the largest on Almea, though the Míddigur desert makes land crossings difficult. Broadly speaking, crops and animals from any part of this zone can be transplanted into any other part; this has facilitated e.g. Verdurian colonization of Téllinor.

The temperate area can be divided into three subzones. A characteristic agricultural package developed in each, though a good deal of mixing has occurred, especially in the east.

Philological note. Almea is an alien planet, and none of the crops and animals mentioned below are exactly the same as Earthly species. See the individual articles for descriptions. I've given plants and animals in eastern Ereláe the names of the nearest terrestrial species. In other areas I’ve used names that suggest valid relationships (e.g. all the “beans” belong to a single family), or form a short description; where neither approach seemed workable I’ve adapted native names.

Contents

Northeastern subzone

This subzone includes Eretald, including its littoral, Dhekhnam, and some Qarau territory, including Karímia. A strip of temperate land, the Irenja, extends westward south of the Rau jungle.

Southeastern subzone

This subzone includes Xengiman, Lenan, Skouras, Feináe, and some Qarau territory. The eastern coast of Luduyn is included, but the interior is part of the arctic zone. (The Skourene littoral and Luduyn are significantly colder than Xengiman— one reason Xengiman’s empires rarely extend into these areas.)

Western subzone

This subzone includes Téllinor and Jagai.
