Island Sea

ZËI

The Island Sea (Verdurian: Nezië Zëi) is the vast expanse of ocean between Téllinor, to the east, and Kereminth and Neinuoi, to the west. Devoid of any large landmasses, it is nonetheless navigable because of the myriad islands which dot it. Over millennia, the Island Sea has been settled by primitive mariners in dugout canoes or reeden rafts, steadily expanding further out by careful observation of currents, the weather, and the flight of birds. Most islanders are the descendants of Melanke seafarers sailing eastwards from Kereminth—and thus speak Kereminthic languages—although a few islands, such as Iryen, are Telise.

In a region spread over so many latitudes, the climate ranges from temperate to tropical. This has made the exchange of flora and fauna a tricky affair, since not all ocean currents flow West-East (or vice versa). While a few continental crops, such as sorghum, have taken root in some areas, in others there have evolved different, peculiar biota.

There is a small Verdurian colony in the south, Sitfi. Other islands of note include Pešon, Iryen, and Iwu.
