< KAČANZA

Kačanza [ka ˈtʃɑn za] is a kingdom on the upper-middle Eärdur river, to the southwest of Bešbalic. It is the only country in Eretald where the majority of the population is of the Telise race and speaks a Somoyi-Meťelyi language, in this case Kačanzayin. (Just outside Eretald, Rhânor is also majority Somoyi, although its court actually speaks Barakhinei). Kačanzayin is written with the Verdurian alphabet.

Kačanza has always been a contested area between the Somoyi-Meťelyi to the west, the Naviu to the southeast, the Karazi, and the Caďinorians. The region has been in Meťelyi hands since the expulsion of the Gelyet c. 2600. We first hear of the nearer Meťelyi being called the Kačanöt in the 2900s. In the early 3000s the Kačanöt pushed the Obenzayet out of the valley of the Selnora to the east, only to be pushed back a century later. The kingdom of Kačanza was organized in 3174 by the warlord Sbečuwu.

The region has had an agricultural population along the river since ancient times; in the Dark Years this was a small Caďinor-speaking community following Caďinorian paganism and bowing to the local nomadic overlords, who ruled or ravaged them as they saw fit. As warfare died down the peasants multiplied greatly, and many Kačanöt settled down to join them; the population is now two-thirds agriculturalist. The nomads retain a pure Meťelyi paganism; among the settlers there are some Eleďi with ancient roots, and the rest follow Caďinorian or Meťelyi gods, or mix the two. Verdurian is the language of trade.
