The Knights of Dévora (Šadenî Dévore) are an all-female Eleďe monastic military order, founded by Luritene Uronis in the early 2800s, and dedicated to combatting injustice.
“If you've got something... hard... to deal with, we'll take it on,” explains a spokeswoman. “The harder the better. We can take it.”
No outsider has ever penetrated into the forested valley which is their headquarters; but no matter, the girls will come to you. Masters (or should we say mistresses) of swords and other long and thick weaponry, they deftly use their considerable skills to avenge crime and make the world a safer, more comfortable place.
“Speaking of comfort, it's hot in here, isn't it?” offers the spokeswoman. She removes her leather jacket and tosses it carelessly onto a divan. “That's better,” she says, with a toss of her mane of silky black hair.
The Knights follow a strict discipline. When a matter comes up, they fully investigate, assuring themselves that it is worthy of their attention. And their attention is intense, like their flashing dark eyes. Their methods are thorough, and they have the reputation of always finding their man— or their woman, for they will go after either sex. Their methods culminate in a nocturnal visit, unnoticed by anyone else in the household. The visit does not take long, but their targets never complain about that.
It is sometimes asked whether men can join the Knights. They cannot, though there are other orders, such as the Fist of Enäron, where male strength and beauty are well appreciated. “Girls are better at this sort of work,” the spokeswoman insists. “Gentle, persistent, and yet honed by years of selfless service. We are very hard to resist, don't you think so? Sometimes, you know, we don't even resist each other.”
Church and state authorities generally do not object to the mission; indeed, they are often deeply involved in the activities of the Knights. Nonetheless, the Knights do not allow men to tell them what to do. “In this order, we give the orders. It's all right— we know exactly what to do; you can relax and leave everything to us,” explains the spokeswoman, whose name is Colibe— “Cuêzi for 'bringing love',” she remarks.
Some, especially some Eleďi, do object to the existence of the order, on the grounds that women should not be engaged in such activities, though the Knights point out that what they do is found in the Old Testament. “Some people have such a narrow interpretation of Eleďát,” breathes Colibe.
The Knights' stylish outfits offer protection— “We always protect ourselves,” says Colibe, reassuringly— without impeding mobility, flexibility, or their considerable animal charm. “I don't like to feel constrained, do you? I'll wear chain mail if necessary, but I don't keep it on a moment longer than I have to. On most missions we don't wear much besides leather. These brass breastplates were a mistake; I swear they're cutting into my flesh. Here, help me, would you? Ah, such a relief to get them off.”
