< KRASNAYA

Krasnaya [qra ˈsna ja] is a country on the middle Svetla, just south of Verduria and north of Ctésifon. The Adel meets the Svetla at Dobray, the capital.

The region was a core province of Caďinas, and fell along with it to the Curiyans in 2792. When Bura liberated Ctésifon, the lord of Krasnaya professed allegiance and sent tribute, but made it clear that he expected to run his own affairs. Bura accepted this, but his son Ertala did not. When the sanno Andörn recognized Caleon's newly proclaimed kingshp (2943), Ertala sent his army north to occupy Dobray, and deposed Andörn in favor of his young son Gurënes.

The ease of this maneuver did much to assure Ertala that he was on the right path and that Caleon could be as easily subdued. Caleon destroyed his army instead (2950), and Krasnaya found itself, along with Ctésifon, a province of the kingdom of Verduria. Caleon made Andörn Lord again, but only under Verdurian sovereignty.

Krasnaya became independent during the Gray Years (c. 3215), was occupied by Mëranac 1e merely as a way-station for the reconquest of Ctésifon, and was lost again during the dynastic strife of the Abolinerons (c. 3360). It is the only foreign country which follows the revision of Verdurian law begun by Mëranac and completed by the Esčambra .

Since 3218 Dobray has had its own Eleďe patriarch, who is responsible for church administration in the southern half of Eretald.

The lords of Krasnaya maintain their independence by never asserting it too blatantly; this is one reason they have never titled themselves kings, and don't impose tariffs on Verdurian goods. Dobray is one of the larger towns on the Svetla, prospering with trade and now manufactures; indeed, it grew so quickly that it's considered impossible for outsiders to get around without local help.

Neighbors: Verduria (to N), Isiza (to SW), Ctésifon (to S), Solhai (to SE).

Etymology: Ver. Krasnaya, probably related to Caď. krais 'limit', Bar. Krazni.
