Moreo Ašcai

From Almeopedia

Moreo Ašcai is the largest island in the Aldovian Archipelago of the Zëi Mišicama, 4000 kilometers north of Kebri, of which it is a colony. It is probably best known as the first-discovered source of coffee. The island is a stopping point on the way to another Kebreni colony at Lascita.

History

The island was originally settled by the Nanese. In the early 3000s, once Kebri began building large ships sturdy enough for open-ocean voyages, the Kebreni discovered coffee (kahawa, in the local language) on the island and established a monopoly on its export to Eretald. This monopoly helped precipitate the Verduria-Kebreni wars; in 3271, a Verdurian fleet of ten ships won a decisive victory over a larger Kebreni force at Moreo Ašcai. After the wars, the island's status as a Kebreni protectorate has devolved to that of a colony, though it seems that Kebreni control of the island is not total: Verdurians have traded there, and the Verdurian language is known to traders, scholars and diplomats on the island. Verdurian Prime Minister Abend Monteneon once financed an expedition to Moreo Ašcai.

Natives drink their coffee black, as do the Kebreni.
