Avena
Oats are a grass that bears large oval seeds, with soft bristles; it is the staple crop of Xengiman and Skouras proper, but is now grown in Eretald, though it does not thrive in the Mišicama littoral or Kebri. The kernels are soft and unpalatable raw, and are usually boiled into porridge or baked with other grains into bread.
The varieties first domesticated by the Wede:i originated in the flood plain of the Xengi, and required very moist soil to germinate. Outside the flood plains the necessary moisture was provided by irrigation. Even today, the highest yields come from these varieties, though there are now varieties that are more tolerant of dry conditions.
