Ogres

From Almeopedia

Ogres are mythological beings of Almea. According to the Count of Years, the malicious spirit Soxāeco created the Ogres as a Thinking Kind to oppose Eīledan's creation of the Giants. Mavordaguendu, king of the Giants, met Bōexurgō the king of the Ogres; the two learned each other's languages, only for Bōexurgō to tell Mavordaguendu that they would fight a war in a month. Soxāeco was angry that Bōexurgō had told the Giants of their intentions— he said the Giant should have been simply killed— but Bōexurgō was stubborn and refused to fight without giving fair warning.

The two sides fought for ten years, prolonged by the enormous strength of the combattants. Each of the two sides weilded natural forces: the Ogres, earthquakes and volcanoes; the Giants, lightning and meteors. The ogres' supernatural allies finally raised up an enormous volcano in Sūās to destroy the Giants' stronghold; but the Giants countered with an enormous wave. The Ogres were said to be entirely destroyed by their own fire, and the Nasuael Swamp formed from the collapsed, drenched volcano.

The ogres, though created by evil spirits, are depicted with a certain sense of honor; some have suggested that they are based on the Somoyi-Meťelyi, whom the Cuzeians considered to be noble and brave though brutal.

Ogres persist in mythology and legend, and some travelers maintain that a few survived the mythological wars and live in some remote area.

Etymology: Caď. kuscakh, Ver. kušak; Cuêzi gauminiu from Gaumê, the Ctelm mountains; the Cuzeians forgot this etymology and commonly believed the name of the mountains came from that of the ogres.
