Rhânor is the name of the desert plateau west of the Rhânor range, and of the kingdom which exercises a tenuous authority over it. It is not particularly civilized: it consists of not much more than a few nomadic desert tribes acknowledging the king’s authority. The Rhânor plateau was brought into the Barakhinei sphere of influence with the conquests of Ambekh I, in the 3100s, though within two generations it was once again independent.
The area originally belonged to the Somoyi, and most tribesmen still speak the Somoyi language. The king’s tribe descends from Ambekh’s family and was originally pure Barakhinei in blood and language; in both areas it is a good deal more mixed with Somoyi today. Knowledge of Barakhinei and links to the royal tribe are both highly valued in all the tribes, and correlate with social rank.
Etymology: Bar. Rhânor 'border; marches, borderland' from Caď. krais "edge + -nor "land".
