Solhai [so ˈla i] is a surcontana (marquisate) on the lower Aranë. Upstream is Vimínia and downstream is Krasnaya; it’s easy also to reach Ctésifon to the west, but to the east the country is separated from northern Vimínia by hilly forests.
The region was long part of the Caďinorian heartland, and submitted to Bura when he freed Ctésifon from the Curiyans in 2917; it passed to Verduria when Caleon conquered Ctésifon in 2950. It drifted into independence during the civil wars following the end of the Prežeon dynasty.
The economy is largely agricultural, but prosperous thanks to the ease of transporting products by river; Lumrehy contributes trade and manufactures. A specialty of Solhai is leather goods; hides are shipped to Lumrehy for processing. Fine furniture is also made there.
The surcontî have for centuries belonged to the Čuney family. In 3427 the heir, Kutro, converted to Eleďát. This was too much for his father, Grösoř, who made it clear that if he persisted in his folly he would not inherit. Kutro didn’t budge, and indeed his father made Kutro’s younger brother Giuro his heir. The local Eleďi naturally revered Kutro for his renunciation, and sometimes called him Nëron Kutro. Kutro always downplayed his action and confessed himself embarrassed by the whole nëronát thing, but he did endow a church in Lumrehy named Nëron Kuro, after an obscure Elenico.
The present surcont is Kainan, son of Giuro. Kainan has a great interest in mechanics, but Solhai is very poor in metals; he has therefore done his tinkering using wood, making clocks, musical instruments, and other machinery entirely out of wood. His cabinet of machines is the wonder of Solhai, but his techniques are not very practical: woodcarvers are expensive and wood breaks too easily. However, an improved lathe invented by Kainan, using a convoluted metal knife to quickly shape the workpiece, has improved the efficiency of furniture production.
