Talk:Population
From Almeopedia
So far, it appears that there are only rough population figures for Verduria, Verdurian speakers, and Xurnese speakers (which roughly coincides with Xurno).
Here are my proposed estimates for selected others:
- Kebri: 4 million
- Erenat: 4.5 million
- Barakhinei speakers: 8.5 million (Mutkun 4 million, Barakhun 1.5 million, Hroth 2.5 million, Rhanor 500,000)
- Ismain speakers: 2 million (Ismahi 1.2 million, Azgami 600,000, Denisovich 200,000)
- Benecia: 3 million
- Besbalic: 2.5 million
- Esan: 2 million
- Svetla: 5 million
- Curiya: 3.5 million
- Viminia: 1.5 million
- Sarnae: 25 million
- Dhekhnam: ??? (very few cities... could be many more people though... haven't figured this one out...)
Apart from direct mentions in the VV texts, what is your logical process of calculation? Exez
- As city formation has just gotten started here, it would seem to me that population density would be relatively uniform, but considerably higher in river basins. This would be why Mutkun is the most populous Barakhinei-speaking country; a lot more than Barakhun itself, which is up in the mountains. And remember... these are Almean humans, who like water more than we do. Verduria does not actually have a lot of major rivers flowing through it -- the Eardur mostly misses it, and the Svetla slices it in the middle at its narrowest point. (Oh, and I screwed up with Svetla -- the 5 million would be Svetla plus Ctesifon, Guaya, and Bazra. I was looking at the map of Eretald at the time.) In addition, the well-developed coasts would have a higher population. Kebri with 4 million seems to make sense to provide it with the necessary labor to provide the huge fleet it has. (Compare England in the 1600s.) Lastly, I had to keep in mind that while Verduria has 6 million people, the number of Verdurian native speakers is 27 million.
- Regarding Dhekhnam: Zompist has said Gelalhát's probably the largest religion on Almea, so I'd wager Dhekhnam has a larger population than Xurno... Adso de Fimnu 14:27, 10 July 2008 (PDT)
- Most of those look way too high. I'll have to think about it... Zompist 16:53, 10 July 2008 (PDT)
OK, I worked out detailed population figures. These are based on the area of each country, land use, and relative density. The estimates outside Eretald are much looser. Xurno started to look too large, so I reduced it a bit. I added a Population line to the nation-er template... if anyone feels like copying figures to each country, that'd be much appreciated.
